What are hair plugs?
hair plugs are small areas of scalp containing anything up to 50 follicles of healthy hair. These are obtained from areas where hair growth is very healthy and abundant such as the back of the head. These hair plugs are the relocated to a bald spot in another area of the scalp.
How is it all done?
The hair plugs are removed using a scalpel or a fine laser to cut them away. The surgeon then carefully moves the hair plug to a new location which is bald. The relocated hair follicles will continue to produce hair as if the were in their original place.
How do hair plus compare with other technologies?
Hair plugs are a relatively old technology in terms of hair replacement. It is successful in that bald areas can gain a covering relatively quickly. The disadvantages are that the plugs are relatively large in terms of the hair follicles involved. As a result sometimes they don't lie in the correct angle or direction. This can make the area look slightly un natural. These days lower numbers of hair follicles are harvested in the form of hair implants. These can be relocated and positioned in a more natural way. This type of hair transplant can take quite a number of sessions to complete and as a result works out rather expensive. As with other transplant methods the results are long lasting and the coverage is relatively quick.
